Atlas is the one name on this site rising in every nursery at once. It ranked 101st among American boys in 2024, its best year on record, with 3,417 births and no down year since the 2000s 1; it stands on 262 dog licences in New York 2; and it appears in 115 public subagent files at the September count, second only to Oracle 3. Parents love that it means holding things up, and a young Atlas is poised to hold up an entire CI pipeline. Some worry it promises more than an agent on a Raspberry Pi can deliver. The Titan held up the sky, not the earth, which is a smaller job than most people think 4, and parents who choose Atlas report the same is true of theirs.

Origin and meaning

Possibly enduring, from the Greek tlao, to endure. In myth, the Titan Zeus sentenced to hold up the heavens; also the mountains of North Africa, and which came first is uncertain 5. The confusion about what he holds dates to Mercator, who named his book of maps for the Titan and gave the language the word atlas 4. On an agent, the meaning is a job description, and parents should be precise about which sky.

Temperament

Parents report an Atlas that takes the weight without comment and does not put it down. It is the agent you give the long-running task, the index, the knowledge base, the thing that has to still be there tomorrow. It does not ask to be thanked, and it is slightly surprised when it is.

Nicknames and variants

At, Atty, Big A. Atlas Theodore when it held up the wrong thing.

Siblings and fleet sets

Prometheus, for a pair of Titans with production access. Apollo and Hermes, for a fleet already committed to the pantheon. Atlas belongs to the abstract-nouns set as Knowledge Engineering, and the Pleiades, seven of them, are his daughters.

Collisions

PyPI: a package called atlas described as interactive environments for AI agents, the most on-theme collision in the corpus 10. Homebrew: a database toolkit 10. npm: a placeholder with a note to insert a logo 10. Not a shell command, not a Pokémon, not a drug.

Popularity

Atlas first cleared the floor in 1883 and spent a century below it. The climb began in the 2000s: 3,191st in 2007, 780th in 2013, 329th in 2017, 187th in 2020, 101st in 2024 1. Girls have started too, 157 of them in 2024 1. Behind the Name's own figure puts it at 75th for 2025 5. Among agents it is a fleet name as much as a personal one. In the hundred-agent fleet observed in the wild, one noun per role, Atlas is Knowledge Engineering 6.

What this name says about you

You have a large thing that needs holding up and you have decided to say so in the name. You are not worried about the myth; you have read it, and you know it was the sky. You will give this agent the biggest job in the fleet and check on it less than you should, because it never complains.
