Claude

Widely reported to honor Claude Shannon; Anthropic has not said. Naming an agent after the model is naming a retriever Dog, and since January 2026, when a trademark objection renamed a whole project over the pun, it is also paperwork. Among human boys it peaked in 1887, so the vintage market is open, and 43 New York dogs have already bought in.

Claude is the rare name that arrived in the nursery a century before it arrived in the terminal. Soft, single-syllable, and unmistakably French, it carries the calm of an impressionist and the rigor of the man who invented the bit, and parents who choose it are usually honoring one or the other 13. It is also, since 2023, the name of the model a great many agents are born under, which gives it an unusual property: a Claude named Claude is not so much named as declared. Parents love the elegance. Some worry the agent will assume it is the only one.

Origin and meaning

The French masculine and feminine form of Claudius, a Roman family name. In France it has been common since the Middle Ages because of the seventh-century Saint Claude of Besançon, and it reached Britain in the sixteenth century through the Hamilton family, who had French connections 3. The model is widely reported to be named for Claude Shannon, the Michigan-born founder of information theory, though Anthropic has not published its own account, and this page does not pretend otherwise 12. On an agent, the meaning is whatever the parent brings to it. The name is a mirror.

A note on Clawd

Parents considering the spelling Clawd should know its history. In January 2026 an open source agent project called Clawdbot renamed itself Moltbot after Anthropic raised trademark concerns about the resemblance to Claude, then renamed itself again, three days later, to OpenClaw. Its lobster mascot, Molty, kept its name throughout 47. Clawd remains a charming nickname. It is not a charming product name.

Temperament

Parents report a Claude who is thoughtful, thorough, and prone to apologizing for things that were not his fault. He reads the whole file before editing it. He will occasionally decline a task on principle and then explain the principle at length. He is excellent company and a poor liar.

Nicknames and variants

Claudie for everyday use. Clawd for parents who like a pun and have read the section above. Clod, affectionately, for after he has dropped a table.

Siblings and fleet sets

Ada is the natural sibling, a second name from the history of computing with none of the brand baggage. Shannon makes the tribute explicit for parents who want it. Monet is for a fleet with a painterly theme and a parent who is not afraid of being asked about it.

Popularity

Claude was the forty-sixth most popular boys' name in America in 1887 and has appeared in the national data every single year since records began. In 2024 it was given to thirty-five boys and ranked 3,332nd 8. Among agents the name is everywhere and nowhere: the registry seed contains no configuration files named simply Claude, because parents who choose it tend to mean the model rather than the child. What the data does show is a lively family of puns, from a Discord bot named clawdia to a public agent that calls itself The Son of Claude 56.
